About Us

Preparing for an MRC concert, on the 28th of August 2023

Divisi is a six-voice ensemble that challenges what we expect from vocal concerts. We strive to break down established norms of classical music through performing old and new work, in new ways. We have a distinct focus on commissioning projects for new works, specifically those that challenge its heteronormative and patriarchal structures.

To achieve this, we maintain a special interest in initiatives that prioritise queer artists. Our Composer Queer initiatives have been our crowing jewel. Commissioning 4 composers in 2019 and now 12 in 2025, alongside Queerstories and Maeve Marsden, to reconstruct the canon with queer artistry at its core. Such projects give agency and professional development to composers and our members, accelerating their musical success. Divisi’s performances have been praised not only for their vocal merits but their “fireside warmth,” story telling, and accessibility to all audiences.
