Divisi is holding general auditions to find a new tenor, baritone, or bass to replace Alex Owens and add new singers to our roster.
Voice types sought: Lower voices (bass, baritone, tenor) — primary; upper voices (pipeline/covers) — secondary
Engagement type: Ensemble singer (contract)
The Opportunity
A vacancy has arisen following the departure of baritone Alex Owens. We’re primarily seeking a lower voice (bass, baritone, or tenor), and are open to placing the right singer across any of those three parts. We’re also accepting upper voice auditions for future pipeline roles.
Divisi is in an exciting stage of growth — new board, new brand, growing philanthropic support, and a strong rehearsal culture. We’re looking for someone to be an excellent colleague now and grow with us.
A Typical Year
- Up to 4 projects (sextet, solo, choral, and more)
- 1+ new commissions
- Rehearsals in the 2–3 weeks preceding each project, planned 6–12 months ahead at quarterly artist meetings
- Rehearsals in Kew or central Melbourne, typically on weeknights and weekends
Remuneration
Variable depending on project funding. We pay rehearsals at LPA rates where funding allows. Example fees available on request.
Who We’re Looking For
An excellent musician, generous collaborator, and values-aligned ensemble member. Specifically:
- Confident and flexible solo and ensemble singer, any style
- Ability to prepare music to a High-standard
- Sight-reading, diction in other languages, and composing/arranging experience are all a plus
Classical training and music degrees are common in the ensemble but neither is required. We weigh cultural fit and values alignment as heavily as vocal skill — and we warmly encourage applicants from all backgrounds. Queer cultural competence matters to us but the ensemble is not exclusively for queer singers.
Audition Process
Stage 1 — Anonymised audio recording (closes July 15)
An audio-only recording, assessed blind by Divisi singers and an external panel. No cost.
Stage 2 — In-person audition (August 1, central Melbourne)
A 20–30 minute session: two prepared pieces (sent two weeks prior), one short-notice piece (sent 24 hours prior), ensemble singing, and a conversation. Stage 1 outcomes notified mid-July.

A Note for Friends and Colleagues
Many applicants will know us personally. We mitigate this through blind auditions and an external panel. Please reach out if you have any concerns.
